The analyst and the medical man.Analyst, 31, 385-404, 1906.Hopkins predicted the existence of vitamins as early as 1906. He fed animals a diet of zein which failed to maintain growth; however, the animals grew at once when casein was substituted. He concluded that “in the organs must appear special, indispensable active substances which the tissues can only make from special precursors in the diet”.
