Bacteriocin production as a mechanism for the antiinfective activity of Lactobacillus salivarius UCC118.Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. (USA), 104, 7617-7621, 2007.Order of authorship in the original publication: Corr, Li, Reidel...Hill. The authors discovered that Lactobacilli produce a bacteriocin, a peptidic toxin that inhibits the growth of similar or closely related bacterial strains. This particular bacteriocin, identified as Abp118, provides the protective value of Lactobacillus salivarius against pathogenic bacteria in the human microbiome.
