Includes 126 hand-colored engraved plates from drawings by Dupont the elder, assisted by Delestre the younger and Verollot, engraved by Johann Theodor Susemihl, a German engraver working in Paris, known for his zoological plates, especially of birds. The majority of the plates depict the genitalia, but here is also an unsual portrait of a black man, which along with an image in Charles Bell's Illustrations of the great operations in surgery, is one of the first representations of a black person in medical iconography. Devergie is remembered for his clear description of pityriasis rubra pilaris, (“Devergie’s disease”). He was the first to demonstrate the presence of a fungus in eczema marginatum.
