The work opens with an essay by Osler citing many early printed medical texts, including a detailed discussion of the earliest bloodletting calendars, showing the influence of the invention of printing upon the dissemination of medieval medical information. Next follows a descriptive list of 217 medical books printed to 1480. This list was edited, with an Editor's Note, by bibliographer Victor Scholderer.
