Billard performed several hundred autopsies on infants and children and correlated the data obtained with clinical observations he had made. This pioneer work on the pathological anatomy of infants includes interesting observations on cerebral congestion, intestinal disturbances, the pulse, teething, etc. It includes the first classification of infantile diseases of any importance (Abt/Garrison). English translation of the third edition, 1839, does not include the atlas of colored plates.
