A new instrument for the treatment of fractures of the lower extremity.Maryland & Virginia med. surg. J., 14, 1-5, 177-181, 1860.Smith devised an anterior or suspensatory splint for use in the treatment of fractures of the femur. The apparatus was heavily used during the U.S. Civil War and was especially valuable in treating compound fractures.
