Rafinesque was a great botanist, conchologist, archaeologist, and economist. Born in a suburb of Istanbul, he was also a world citizen and a prolific writer with 939 works to his credit. He died in extreme poverty in Philadelphia and, but for the intervention of a few friends, his body would have been sold for dissection purposes.
